On the problem of the pathology of spasmodic torticollis in man.

چکیده
Those regions which have been implicated by experimental and clinical neuropathological studies in the pathogenesis of spasmodic torticollis were examined in detail in the present patient and no histological abnormalities found. In the light of marked species differences in the effects of certain brain lesions on posture and the findings reported here, the pathogenesis of spasmodic torticollis in man may well be different from its pathogenesis in experimental animals.

متن کاملVestibular hyperreactivity in patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis.
Ocular motor tests performed on 14 patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis were normal. The vestibulo-ocular reflex tested in eight patients showed a significant high level in seven. It is suggested that this phenomenon is secondary rather than the cause of spasmodic torticollis.

The prognosis in 30 patients with spasmodic torticollis proved to be unexpectedly bad, only one patient making a full and sustained recovery. Investigation did not confirm previously reported reflex influences on the degree of spasm. Detailed otological investigation did not suggest that spasmodic torticollis originates in vestibular dysfunction. Psychological assessment of the patients showed ...
متن کاملSaccadic function in spasmodic torticollis.
Twelve patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis were compared with 19 normal controls on tests of saccadic eye movements thought to depend upon normal basal ganglia function. The patients were able to make random, predictive, remembered, and self-paced saccades equally as well as control subjects. This suggests that those parts of the basal ganglia which may be damaged in spasmodic tortic...
متن کاملVascular catastrophe following the Dandy McKenzie operation for spasmodic torticollis.
Delayed brain stem ischaemia following operation for spasmodic torticollis, is described. The mechanism for this catastrophe is considered and a hypothesis proposed which might allow its prediction and prevention. The overall results, the side and complications of this operation are summarised.
